Feb 2, 2004 · Take care of these issues and a 406 will run just as well as a 383, but when you stomp the gas pedal you will feel the extra cubic inches the 406 has. 400 Pro s No if and or buts there is NO replacement for displacement: 350, .30 over, 3.75 stroke = 383 CI. 400, .30 over, 3.75 stroke = 406 CI. It cost about the same to build a 406 or 383. No SBC is bad. A 383 cost the same to build as a 406 with the only exception being you might have to pay a little more for a 400 block over a 350 block.

This was one of the (unfortunately) rare times a car rag actually did tests over several manufacturers. Power isn't the main goal. Before you say build a 4 cylinder or V6 let's just say it has to be a SBC. A smaller bore/ longer stroke vs. a bigger bore/ shorter stroke of about the same displacement (ie. 305 vs. 302) should get better mileage.
