Tobira: Gateway to Intermediate Japanese is the obvious followup to the 2nd Tobira: Beginner book. I actually wrote a short review of the beginner Tobira book here. Enjoy! Personally, I find it to be just like Genki, but more colorful and with modern language-learning features like the “Can-Do” system for learning and goal-setting.I tried Genki. I gave up in a couple of weeks. I tried Japanese From Zero. I made it a month before losing focus. I tried Genki again; same result. Then I tried Tobira and now after 2 months (~1.5-2 hrs a day), I'm not only continuing, but going STRONG. I'm halfway through book 1 and my motivation hasn't waned.
